The meaning of fiber media converters indicator and common failure causes

It is inevitable that the fiber media converters will malfunction during use. we will talk about the meaning of the normal indicator of the fiber media converter and what it should be during normal operation. What are the common failures and the reasons?

Understand what the indicator light of the fiber media converter means?

1000M-when it is on, it means 1000M speed

100M-when it is on, it represents 100M speed

FX/Act-when it is on, it means that the pigtail has been connected, and when it is flashing, it means that data is being transmitted

TX/Act——When it is on, it means the network cable is connected, and when it flashes, it means data is being transmitted.

FDX——When it is on, it represents the full-duplex rate, and when it is off, it represents the half-duplex.

PWR——When it is on, it means the power cord has been connected and the power supply is working normally


Common failure causes of fiber media converter

When the fiber media converter is working normally, the corresponding rate indicator on the upper row is always on, the lower row is on, and the middle indicator is flashing,trouble phenomenon;

(1) The FX/Act optical fiber indicator does not light up

1. The fiber optic cable is blocked; use a laser flashlight, sunlight, etc. to illuminate one end of the fiber optic patch cords; see if there is visible light at the other end? If there is visible light, it means that the fiber optic patch cords is not broken.

2. The fiber media converter interface is broken.

3. The transmitter fiber media converter is broken;

4. The fiber link is not cross-connected, or the fiber mode is wrong. Use the correct connection method as TX-RX, RX-TX to solve;

5. The transmission distance is too long or the intermediate loss is too large, which exceeds the standard loss of this product. The solution is take measures to reduce the intermediate loss or replace it with a fiber media converter with a longer transmission distance.


(2) The TX/Act twisted pair indicator light is off

1. Wrong twisted pair connection;

2. Poor contact between the twisted pair crystal plug and the device, or the quality of the twisted pair itself, choose a normal network cable for connection;

3. Check whether the transmission rate of the device matches or does not match If so, replace the rate-matched device.


(3)The optical port (FX) indicator of the A fiber media converter is on while the optical port (FX) indicator of the B fiber media converter is off

fiber media converters are generally used in pairs, 1. A fiber media converter (TX) optical transmitting port is broken, because the optical port (RX) of B fiber media converter cannot receive optical signals; 2. A fiber media converter (TX) there is a problem with the optical fiber link of the optical transmission port (the optical cable or the light jumper may be broken).


(4)All five lights are on or the indicator is normal but cannot be transmitted

Generally turn off the power and restart it to return to normal.


(5) Severe network packet loss, the possible faults are as follows;

1. The electrical port of the fiber media converter and the network device interface, or the duplex mode of the device interface at both ends do not match;

2. There is a problem with the twisted pair cable and the RJ-45 head, check it;

3. The fiber connection problem, fiber patch cords whether the connection is correct, whether the pigtail is matched with the fiber patch cords and the coupler type;

4. The optical fiber line loss exceeds the receiving sensitivity of the equipment.


(6) Slow internet speed or frequent packet loss

The optical module is greatly affected by the temperature. After the temperature range is exceeded (generally the working temperature of the optical fiber module can reach 70°C), the transmitted optical power of the optical module of the optical module is affected and decreased, thereby weakening the quality of the optical network signal The packet loss rate increases, and even the optical link is disconnected.

If the fiber media converter is working normally, the PWR power indicator must be on constantly, the FX-/ACT fiber link indicator, TX-/ACT network link indicator must be on or flashing, if not, check whether the corresponding link is on The connection is normal; as to whether the FDX working mode indicator, FX-100 optical fiber rate indicator, and TX-100 network rate indicator are always on, there is no substantial impact on the fiber media converter.
